Söderlångvik Masterclass
3.-5.5.2024

Spring 2024 will see the launch of a new residency initiative between the arts fund Föreningen Konstsamfundet and Helsinki International Film Festival. The initiative will take the form of a three-day masterclass, bringing together a select group of industry professionals to the scenic Söderlångvik summer residence of Konstsamfundet’s founder and film enthusiast Amos Anderson, located on Kimito Island.

In the masterclass, participants will engage in a curated exchange of knowledge and perspectives led by an experienced Nordic talent of the film industry, with the focus of fostering connections in a collaborative and intimate setting.

The first Söderlångvik Masterclass will be led by Finnish actor and Golden Globe nominee Alma Pöysti. With a long career in film and theatre, most recently seen headlining the festival hit Fallen Leaves, Pöysti’s participation highlights the quality of the weekend’s program and promises a fulfilling experience for the participants. The Spring 2024 edition will focus on the collaboration between actors and directors, providing concrete points of intersection for shared learning.

Taking place on 3-5 of May, the first edition of the masterclass will be led by Finnish actor Pöysti, and will be moderated by journalist Marta Balaga. The masterclass will be held in English, and will be made up of 12 professional actors and directors from the Nordics, chosen by a jury of industry experts. After a weekend full of exchanged insights and new collaborations, the masterclass will culminate in BEHIND THE SCENES: in conversation with actor Alma Pöysti and cinematographer Linda Wassberg; an evening of conversation and a film screening which will be open to the public at Helsinki’s Bio Rex Lasipalatsi on Sunday the 5th of May.

The masterclass weekend will begin in the morning of Friday the 3rd of May in Helsinki, from where participants will be transported to the masterclass venue in Kimito Island, around 170km towards southwest Finland. Under Pöysti’s direction, the masterclass will continue at the Söderlångvik manor until Sunday the 5th of May, when participants will be transported back to Helsinki to attend the concluding screening to the masterclass weekend at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi.

Six actors and six directors were chosen after a thorough selection process involving over 100 applications, securing representation of each Nordic country in the final group. The selection emphasised participants’ interest in Nordic collaboration and focused on assembling a group of professionals at different stages of their careers. This diversity enriches the masterclass, providing an invaluable opportunity to learn from and collaborate with the region’s cinematic talent. Participants for the masterclass are:

Edvin Endre (Sweden)
Josefin Neldén (Sweden)
Kingsford Siayor (Norway)
