Truly Naked
An introverted teenager works in his father’s amateur porn business but discovers a new kind of intimacy with his independent classmate.
What does it mean to learn about sexual consent and healthy intimacy in a world where sexuality is mediated, commodified and performed? Introverted and sexually inexperienced, Jamie spends his days filming low-budget pornographic productions run by his father, who also stars in them.
Performed with raw honesty by Cameron James-King, Jamie grows up in a seaside town, where he tries, mostly in vain, to keep his double life out of view. Instead he finds himself trapped between two different influences: Lizzie (Alessa Savage, a real porn actress), one of his father’s performers, who has become something like an older sister; and Nina (the enigmatic Safiya Bennaddi), a classmate whose independence and charm stand out and throw everything he thought he knew into question. Growing up in an environment where sex is constantly staged and simulated but genuine intimacy never fully takes shape, he struggles to navigate his own emotional and sexual awakening.
In Truly Naked, the highly provocative initial premise gradually unfolds into a surprisingly tender and unsettling coming-of-age story. The film has little interest in pornography as subject matter. Its real terrain is Jamie’s vulnerable interior life and his nuanced emotional journey. Instead of reducing its protagonist to a victim of circumstance, it reflects on how the porn industry constructs the male gaze, how the patterns are internalised and reproduced, and how they can be confronted and reimagined.
