In a Japanese boarding school, teenage girls are holding their breath. They are to become mermaids in the world's best aquariums. But could one of them be the real deal?
Teenage girls are holding their breath at a Japanese boarding school. They have to learn how to control their lungs and heartbeats because they are about to become mermaids in the biggest aquariums in the world, beloved by their fans. Upon arrival at the school each girl chooses a mermaid name, dyes their hair a pastel color and tries to find their own siren song used to charm audiences at arenas and in social media.
The dreamlike movie follows the everyday life of the school and the girls getting ready for mermaid contests through the eyes of Akame, who chooses Deep Sea as her mermaid name. The shy and reserved Deep Sea struggles to stand out from her school mates and fellow competitors. Could her siren song drown sailors and seduce sharks?
Titanic Ocean is the gorgeous debut feature film by Konstantina Kotzamani, which premiered at the legendary Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. The film avoids definition. Magical realism might be the closest description, but the school for mermaids does not feel quite real compared to the realities of everyday life. The film looks as delicious as Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette and asks what happens to girls who are raised in aquariums when there is a whole ocean waiting outside.
