The Red Hangar
This political thriller about the first 24 hours of Chile’s 1973 coup tells its story from the perspective of an officer driven into a moral dead end.
The Chilean coup in September 1973 doesn’t start without a warning. Beforehand Air Force Captain Jorge Silva (Nicolás Zárate) receives a phone call telling him to be ready. He hangs up.
Violence happens in the borders of peripheral vision and hearing. Its existence is nearly automatic in an environment where the revolution routinely humiliates it’s enemies both in windowless backrooms and in open stadiums.
Closeups of Silva’s face and lingering moments where the captain ponders how to operate next bring an intense atmosphere to the black and white moral study, while evading deeply sharp images. The film seems to imply from the start it’s impossible to do the right thing.
The film’s events occur within 48 hours. It’s based on Fernando Villagrán’s memoir, where he recounts his own experiences in the red hangar.
