The History of Concrete presents the history of concrete in reverse chronological order, from the present day back to the Roman Empire. Along the way, we meet a company that removes chewing gum from the streets of New York, touch on a firm that preserves the tattoos of deceased people, ponder religious ultra-runners, crash Kim Kardashian’s party, and before you know it, you’ll find yourself down a rabbit hole with documentarist John Wilson as your guide!
In his debut feature film, Wilson finally brings the awkward humour and secret sensitivity familiar from his HBO series How To with John Wilson to the big screen. At the start of the film, Wilson takes part in a workshop teaching how to make a Hallmark Christmas film, known for its rom-com clichés. Wilson takes up the challenge and, armed with what he’s learnt, sets out to make a film about the force that unites us all: concrete.
Commenting shyly from behind his camera, Wilson draws the viewer into his stream of consciousness; a dizzyingly erratic, essayistic journey through the peculiar raw material of life he has sifted from the mass of everyday existence. Wilson’s disarming, sincere joy and curiosity are combined with a series of increasingly witty observations on this ordinary material that both separates and unites us all – and, in the process, also the history of concrete is covered, sort of.
