The End of It
A sci-fi satire starring a stellar cast about an artist who has grown tired of eternal life and decides to turn her own death into a work of art.
Spanish director Maria Martínez Bayona’s first feature film, The End of It, explores how to live a meaningful life in a world where ageing has been overcome and people can live forever.
In the film, Claire (Rebecca Hall), a former provocative artist, is approaching the age of 250. Surrounded by the same superficial friends, her robot assistant (Beanie Feldstein) and an unchanging daily routine, she has had enough and makes a scandalous decision: she wants to die. The decision throws her husband’s (Gael García Bernal) and daughter‘s (Noomi Rapace) lives into chaos but ignites a new creative fire within Claire. She decides to turn her own death into her final great work of art.
Hall delivers a magnificent performance in the film as a woman trying to find the last shred of humanity in an overly polished world. This satirical sci-fi drama, which captivated audiences at the Cannes Film Festival, plays with pitch-black humour and existentialist absurdism. It is a sharp and fresh portrayal of the artificiality of human relationships, parenthood, and the human compulsion to seek meaning. The End of It stylishly and poignantly explores whether anything matters at all without an end.
