The Dreamed Adventure
In this Cannes Jury Prize winner, an archaeologist navigates a tangled web of rival crime bosses and decades-old relationships on the shadowy fringes of Bulgaria and the law.
On the map, the border between Bulgaria and Turkey is almost plumb right next to the Matochina village. To the locals, however, the region is more of a fluid border zone, where even Greece is right around the corner. Time seems to have partially stopped on the Soviet years, but on the other hand the criminal activity, centered around different forms of modern trafficking, is flourishing.
The main characters of The Dreamed Adventure zigzag amid the bickering kingpins and decades of relationship complications: Veska is the manager of archaeological excavations in Matochina, and Saïd, living off other people’s possessions, returns to the nearby town of Svilengrad after a long time away. Choices made in their youth have thrown the characters onto the narrow path or aside from it.
Director Valeska Grisebach became known for her film Western (R&A 2017), and The Dreamed Adventure, in turn, got the Jury Prize in Cannes. In this film the journey itself is the aim. Many storylines unravel, but intentionally only a few are woven back together. Amateur actors are successfully included in the party and yard parliament scenes, which adds to the film’s authenticity. Through small gestures and vibrant scenes even the supporting characters open up to the viewer.
