The solution to financial woes: kidnap a rich man’s daughter! In this taut Korean chamber thriller, the balance of power keeps shifting.
Hae-ran is a young Korean Chinese woman, currently illegally in South Korea. She’s trying to gather money for her sister’s surgery and gets on board Tae-soon’s plan to kidnap So- jin, the daughter of a rich businessman, and demand a ransom of 1 million won. So-jin is held captive in a room in an apartment block that’s under construction. Hae-ran, too, is partially imprisoned every time Tae-soo leaves to manage connections with the prisoner’s family. There is, however, a fly in the ointment as So-jin starts claiming she hasn’t been in touch with her father for years. Is she telling the truth?
The intense film is inspired by the 2009 British thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed and takes place almost entirely in one building. The trio’s power dynamics alternate as each of them has the upper hand in turn, as surprising facts surface from everyone’s backstories. Hae-ran starts bonding with So-jin, but can So-jin be trusted?
Jung Ji-so, playing Hae-ran, is known for her role in Parasite as the rich family’s daughter and from the hit drama The Glory. Cha Joo-young, the actor of So-jin, is also known from the same K-drama. Lee Soo-hyuk makes Tae-soo a cold-blooded and disingenuous psychopath. The snappy one-space thriller works and goes hard.
