Roma Elastica
A surreal, absurdly funny portrait of an actress (Marion Cotillard) facing a crisis on the set of a sci-fi film in 1980s Rome, haunted by fears of oblivion and death.
Roma Elastica takes the viewer to Rome in 1982, where a washed-up star actress Eddie (Marion Cotillard) arrives in Cinecittà’s studio to film the scifi film that will either save or end her career.
Director Bertrand Mandico bows deeply to Fellini, but honours also the aesthetic of 80’s B movies. The Fellinian atmosphere is found not only through camera work but also sound design: the characters have been dubbed in a dreamlike manner like in 8 ½.
Otherwise, Roma Elastica is a lively union of scifi and kitsch spiced with body horror and cigarette smoke. Cult stars Franco Nero and Ornella Muti even drop by in front of the camera. The streets of Rome are never reached, but Cinecittà’s huge props tower in the background.
On his journey Eddie encounters her younger self, who appears like Janus-face in between of the past and the present. Reality and film mix. Instead of the Fellinian filmmaker’s creative crisis, the centre of the film is taken by an actress’s crisis: can an aging star make a comeback, or does the only road lead to a death in front of the camera (or behind)?
