A melancholically charming hangout film captures the struggles of young adults amid Tallinn’s changing seasons.
Everyone knows what it feels like when it’s a summer night and you just want to quit your job and start living your life. Sebastian (Mihkel Kuusk) is stuck in apathy behind a shop register when Silo (Karl Birnbaum), a free spirit, stops by to buy rolling papers and plants the idea in his head. The young men click immediately. Time to lock up the store for the night and hit the beach on the way to a party. Tallinn’s summer is short after all.
At the party Sebastian meets Silo’s friends, among them Mr. Maze (Edgar Vunš), who dreams of his hip hop breakthrough, and law student Nora (Maria Helena Seppik). Sebastian and Nora share a love of movies and start going out. Soon Sebastian faces a choice: continue his relationship with ambitious Nora or flee the Baltic human fridge to the beaches of Brazil with Silo?
In the urban heart of Tallinn long drinks flow, roll-ups burn and seasons change. Time waits for no one, and if you wish for a change, you have to make it yourself. But do you really wish for it, and what if it’s too late? Rolling Papers, Estonia’s charming Oscar submission, accurately captures a generation’s melancholy and sense of being adrift. The multitalented Meel Paliale (Tree of Eternal Love, R&A 2022) is not only behind the script and direction, but also the Mr. Maze tunes that give the film its heartbeat.
