Goya winner Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s new film is a strikingly agonizing but sensitive account of the relationship between a father and a daughter. Javier Bardem morphs into his role as celebrated filmmaker Esteban Martinez, who decides to present his adult daughter (superb Victoria Luengo, who also stars in Pedro Almodóvar’s new film) a grand opportunity. The artist father left Emilia’s life a long time ago, but now he offers his actress daughter an important role in his next project. Is he trying to make up for lost time? The film follows the upcoming shoot.
The Beloved is a film about filmmaking. Instead of star power and glamour, Sorogoyen’s relentless gaze focuses on psychology and power dynamics. Bardem’s acclaimed role is – according to The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw – his most frightening since No Country for Old Men (2007).
The cast and crew are brought to the Sahara Desert to bear witness to the slowly building pressure reaching its breaking point. Laura Birn is seen in the back half of the film as Martinez’s new wife.
The stylised and polished film had it’s opening in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
