Jeanette Nordahl’s second feature Beginnings portrays a family in the midst of crisis. The married couple Ane (Trine Dyrholm) and Thomas (David Dencik) have been going through a divorce behind their children’s backs, but an even bigger crisis enters their lives when Ane suddenly suffers a stroke. The mother loses control of her left arm and leg, and with it, her ability to manage the family’s everyday life. The couple decides to continue living together, despite Thomas already having a new partner. This sharp depiction of family dynamics and marriage during a crisis premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival.

“‘Beginnings’ observes with great care and intensity the conflicted affections and lingering obligations between a couple both impatient and unready to live apart — but extends its compassionate gaze and knotty interior understanding to other affected parties, including their increasingly fragile eldest daughter and an extra-marital lover waiting for the next chapter of her own life to begin.” Guy Lodge, Variety
