Skábmagovat Film Festival in partnership with Love & Anarchy presents the latest in Sámi short film, leading the viewer into the heart of Sápmi. The short film showcase ČSV – Show Sámi Spirit weaves together stories about hope, dreams, resistance, the crucial turning points of youth, and the absurdities produced by colonisation. The showcase is curated by Radio-JusSunná / Sunna Nousuniemi, the creative director of Skábmagovat Film Festival.

Oahpes Bahá delves into the thoughts of 17-year-old Elli Anne from Kárášjohka as hope and dreams are put to the test. The film explores the dissonance between the external portrayal of Sámi culture and the internal experience. How long can Elli Anne hold on to her dream of Sápmi? 

Mu gieđas – In My Hand is the story of the Indigenous activist Niillas Somby, which explores the personal and historical struggles of the Sámi people. The film navigates between imprisonment, protests, and surreal encounters, providing a unique insight into one man’s extraordinary journey. 

In Eallu lea Eallin – She Who Leads the Herd, a young Sámi reindeerherder woman is torn between pursuing further education or continuing the traditional lifestyle of her ancestors. This short documentary follows her journey and explores the different aspects of a threatened Indigenous cultural heritage in today’s society. 

Siõrškuäđam – Hidden Steps is a dance film about Laura, a Skolt Sámi woman who grew up outside the Sámi region. Through the quadrille dance she reaches out to her unknown cultural heritage. 

The Norwegian Supreme Court has ruled that a wind farm built on the reindeer grazing lands violates the Sámi people’s rights; however, the wind turbines remain in place. In response, young Sámi activists protest to compel the government to take action in the film Gumppe Guvlui – For Our Rights.
