R&A Afters x Yle Teema: My Name Is Dingo
This joint screening by Yle Teema and R&A presents the film that received by far the most votes in Yle’s 100 Most-Wanted Films campaign. The free screening of My Name Is Dingo caps off the R&A Afters on the Saturday after the festival in Bio Rex Lasipalatsi. The film will also air simultaneously on Yle Teema and remain available on Yle Areena until Christmas 2027.

Dingo’s breakthrough in the mid 1980’s marked a shift in Finnish popular culture: an exceptional moment in which the new truly felt new. My Name is Dingo, directed by Mari Rantasila, transports us into the era of hysterical Dingomania, when make-up-wearing Pertti “Nipa” Neumann from Pori became an icon worshipped by a generation.
Catchy pop melodies, New Wave style and romantic sensitivity blend together to form Dingo’s iconic sound. Songs like “Sinä ja minä”, “Nahkatakkinen tyttö” and “Autiotalo” became the anthems of the time, their poetic imagery and Finnish sense of melancholy speaking to a huge audience. This biopic narrates the band’s rise and fall, and explores the origin, and price, of stardom. How does one musician become a national obsession? What happens to a person whose identity and public image begin to blur?
Rantasila’s direction moves through the ecstasy of the concerts to the tension between friendship, creativity and public pressure coming to a head behind the scenes. Leading man Saku Taittonen grasps Neumann’s charisma and sensitivity in a way that reveals the fragile person behind the icon.
