Seyo Kim (Chen Emilie Yan), a German state prosecutor in the early stages of her career, is enjoying a day off in the summer when a petrol bomb is thrown at her. Kim narrowly survives the racially motivated attack and becomes very disappointed in the German legal system she has vowed to advocate for. She decides to take the matters into her own hands and bring the offenders eye to eye with the law personally. But revenge is like fire: a good journeyman and a bad master.

The revenge story woven into the mold of a thriller gives a voice to the people who have been victims to racist attacks and whose voices have been silenced by the dusty binders in the prosecutors’ offices. Piece by piece Kim builds a map of a complete old boys’ club that keeps hiding its own tracks.

Effective character depiction, personal tragedies and confident directing create a film that shakes and brings up thoughts like quality literature. Chen Emilie Yan’s outstanding performance oozes obsessive frenzy and the weight of decades of discrimination.

Faraz Shariat, who handles the themes of immigration and queerness in his films, has made a confidently political film with individual and collective levels. The ignorance of discrimination and racism in the eye of the legal system is one of the most important and timely topics in the western countries, Finland included.
