This epic drama tells the story of the Palestinian uprising under British rule—a struggle for freedom that continues to this day.
In a Palestinian village, ordinary life goes on. The land lives beneath their feet and rises in the film as a character of its own. The film glides through sunsets and cotton fields; the mountains hide resistance fighters and secrets, and the orchards frame conversations between a mother and daughter. Its historical texture is deepened by colourised archival footage of the fields, the sea, trade, and the pulse of the city.
Palestine 36 is a historical drama written and directed by Annemarie Jacir, set during the 1936 uprising under British colonial rule. One of the film’s protagonists is young Yusuf (Karim Daoud Anaya), who moves between the restless city life of Jerusalem and his rural village as British rule tightens its grip while the rebellion spreads. Alongside Yusuf move real historical figures, from both the Palestinian resistance and the ranks of the British administration.
Palestine 36 builds a bridge from the past to the present, to the events of the 2020s and the genocide committed by Israel in Palestine. The 1936–1939 revolt never truly ended, and the long struggle for freedom continues still.
