Mother of Flies

Mickey, a student, has already beaten cancer once, but a medical check-up unexpectedly reveals a new tumour, and there is no longer any cure on offer. Together with his father, a skeptic, he sets out in search of an alternative treatment. In the heart of a remote forest on the edge of the Catskill Mountains, they find the eccentric healer Solveig and her sinister rituals.
Delving into the core elements of folk horror, Mother of Flies is a true hands-on indie production created by the whole family. Directors John Adams and Toby Poser, along with their daughter Zelda Adams (who, in a nod to one of the most famous horror families, are playfully referred to as ‘the Adams Family’) have already worked extensively together, rising with each film from the small circle of the most dedicated horror enthusiasts into the consciousness of a wider audience.
A deep love for the genre shines through in every meticulously composed scene. The filmmakers, who champion an art-house horror style that leans towards the philosophical and even the experimental, have created a highly distinctive visual language and narrative style. The limited budget has been used carefully, making skilful use of the gorgeous natural mountain scenery. In a creative DIY spirit, the family is responsible for virtually every element of the film, from the music to the editing.
