Directed by Spanish filmmaker Alberto Rodríguez (Marshland, R&A 2015), this thriller spends much of its running time underwater, creating a drowning sense of suspense. The underwater cinematography by Swedish cinematographer Eric Börjeson and his team has rightly won awards at festivals.
On land Antonio, known as Tigre (Antonio de la Torre), and his sister Estrella (Bárbara Lennie) find themselves having to sort out relationship troubles and financial problems, with solutions to both lying beneath the surface.
The plan seems watertight until holes begin to appear. The one thing more dangerous than smuggled cocaine is stolen cocaine. Their secret does not remain submerged for long, and the claustrophobia of the diving sequences gradually spreads into broad daylight.
Shot in the industrial port area of Huelva in Andalusia, this genre film does not wallow in its grim subject matter but remains down-to-earth and realistic. Despite its genre trappings, Los Tigres has been compared to the work of British filmmaker Ken Loach.
