Good Boy
Told from a dog’s perspective, this horror film follows Indy, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who is the only one to sense the threat and protect his owner from the curse of an old house.
A dog’s senses are estimated to be around ten times more acute than our own. Dogs see, hear and smell far more than humans ever could. Ever alert, a dog is instinctively prepared to protect its pack to the very end.
This idea forms the foundation of Good Boy, the world’s first horror film told from a dog’s perspective. Director Ben Leonberg’s own Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, Indy, takes the lead role. Indy and his owner leave the city behind to move into the deceased grandfather’s house in the middle of the countryside. As darkness consumes the house and nightmares seep into everyday life, Indy is the only one who senses the lurking danger in every corner – and the only one capable of protecting his owner from the curse that haunts the house.
Good Boy is at its strongest when it draws horror from its superbly chosen settings. Rarely have an autumn forest, a graveyard, or a rain-soaked night inspired such a deep sense of unease as they do in the film’s finest moments.
The film simply would not be the same without Indy. Leonberg’s direction deliberately avoids the conventional cinematic focus on human faces, choosing instead to linger on Indy’s remarkably expressive eyes. His innocence, silent observation and unexpected bravery create unforgettable – and at times genuinely moving – moments that stay with you long after the credits roll.
