Ghost in the Cell
A group of prisoners fight for survival against a malevolent spirit in the gleefully unhinged Indonesian genre mash-up.
Prison awaits journalist Dimas when he’s found covered in blood in his boss’s office, the boss gutted and hung across the ceiling fan. For a nice guy like Dimas, prison is a scary place, but the gangs and the sadistic guards are just the beginning: when the grand-guignol-style murders continue within the prison walls, all hell literally breaks loose.
As the bodies mount, the prisoners begin to suspect Dimas. Soon, however, it becomes clear that supernatural forces are at work and no mortal man is safe. The prisoners will have to wield every conceivable weapon to survive.
The Indonesian jailhouse throwdown Ghost in the Cell gleefully breaks out of every genre thrown at it. Among its ingredients are drama, horror, martial arts, fantasy and slapstick, often within the same scene. The film creates for itself a freewheeling style in which a brawl can become a dance and gore effects share space with wholesome themes of friendship and collaboration.
Particular hilarity ensues when the prisoners discover that the spirit stalking them picks as its victims the angriest individuals, making positive thinking the most valuable weapon in their fight for survival.
