Erupcja
Bethany (Charli XCX in her first leading role) wanders and parties through the streets of Warsaw in search of herself and her soulmate. Her boyfriend follows close behind with an engagement ring in his pocket.
Charli XCX plays Bethany who travels to Warsaw with her boyfriend Rob. The kind and kind of boring Rob thinks that he is there for a romantic holiday with his girlfriend.
Meanwhile, Beth is pining after her former crush Nel, who lives in the city. Beth takes the volcanic eruption of Mount Etna as a sign that she must find Nel again because with Rob “the earth doesn’t shake and the volcanoes don’t erupt.” With an engagement ring in his pocket, poor Rob strings along as Bethany parties with Nel in the neon lights of Warsaw.
Erupcja is a film for the millennials who were let down when they realised that life wasn’t as magical as Amélie let them think 25 years ago. Instead, daily life became nihilistic and the performative nature of hipster culture created a generation that dreamt of a rewarding life but were unable to do anything to achieve it. If you recognise yourself in this description, then the simultaneously self-ironic and serious Erupcja is probably the film for you. The same insecure fumbling that Joachim Trier depicted so gracefully in his movie The Worst Person in the World is also present in the insightful shots of Erupcja. Same fumbling, different shape.
