A darkly comic adult animation and sharp dystopia following Arnold, a middle-aged mouse who begins to suspect his entire life is merely a staged illusion.
Filmmaker Alberto Vázquez is responsible for some of the most unique work in contemporary Spanish animation (Psiconautas, Unicorn Wars). With Decorado, Vazquéz expands his Goya-winning short into a feature-length existential nightmare, its cutesy animation concealing a merciless examination of alienation, power and freedom.
Albert, a middle-aged and chronically unemployed mouse, begins to suspect his whole life, marriage, and the society around him are all staged. The mysterious death of a friend only deepens his paranoia, and his investigations soon lead him behind the façade of an all-powerful megacorporation. Decorado is not a classic conspiracy thriller, though; Vázquez constructs an absurdist fairytale, where reality is ever slipping out of reach.
All at the same time, Decorado toys with Disney’s classic animal animations, Orwellian dystopias and illusory reality á la The Truman Show. The final result is visually dizzy, morbidly comical and philosophically restless. This adult animation offers neither comfort nor moral lessons, but invites the viewer to question everything that seems obvious. If all the world’s a stage, who writes the script?
