CAMP
In this girl horror film, traumatised Emily becomes a counsellor at a youth summer camp. Cue wine-fuelled bonding and campfire antics, spells and confronting past trauma.
Emily, who has faced several tragic deaths in her young life, ends up working as a camp counsellor at a summer camp for troubled children. Awaiting her there is a peculiar, intoxicatingly irresistible group of fellow counsellors, for whom the camp is an annual tradition. Soon, red-wine-fuelled bonding sessions around the campfire and esoteric revelry in the summer night follow, as the young women sink ever deeper into the depths of their newly formed coven.
Director and screenwriter Avalon Fast, member of Jane Schoenbrun’s (Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, R&A 2026) queer cinematic entourage, is a strong, fiercely independent filmmaker who has dubbed the genre of her films ‘girl horror’. And indeed, CAMP delves into the dreamlike, melancholic core of girlhood and young womanhood, where, whilst there is cuteness and sentimentality, traumas and the horrors of patriarchy are also transformed into the fuel for something explosive.
It is probably no great exaggeration to hail CAMP as a 2020s update of The Craft. Bowing respectfully to its cult ancestor, CAMP continues to explore the intertwining of witchcraft, the occult and gender with sharp insight, delivering a real punch in the gut.
