Brunch Screening: The Dance Club

When medical diagnoses are churned out under the pressure of strict performance targets, higher profits are generated at the expense of sick people. On the other hand, if you feel a conflict of values with this kind of workplace, it is of course possible to experiment with new treatment methods behind your employer’s back.

One Saturday morning, opportunity makes the shrink when a car packed with broken souls pulls up to the clinic. Johannes, a psychology student completing his internship, is the only person on site, and he decides to offer his help. Together with the mysterious Rakel, who is equally disillusioned with conventional treatments, he ends up treating patients through dance therapy. As the dance group grows, Johannes struggles to keep things under control, and peer support is there only up to the point where others’ boundaries are reached.

Director Lisa Langseth’s (Euphoria, R&A 2018; TV series Love & Anarchy) comeback film can be seen, depending on your perspective, as either a psychological comedy or a comedy about psychology. This entertaining music film is packed with energy, romance, and a dash of social commentary. For its audience, The Dance Club shows that, at least in the movies, the trolls and demons that have taken root in one’s mind can be banished through dance.
