The Colors Within
In this visually stunning coming-of-age story, a high school girl who sees other people as colours searches for her place in the world—and ends up starting a band.
Three misfits meet on the fringes of loneliness. What else is there to do but start a band! Yet a shadow looms over their youthful freedom: the strict regulations of the church and the suffocating expectations of adults. Totsuko, who perceives the world in colours, still cannot quite recognise her own.
Secrets and dreams intertwine in a dazzling bath of colour. Defiance, friendship, and sheer joy will touch the heart of anyone who has ever felt their pulse quicken to the rhythm of a shared song.
Director Naoko Yamada and screenwriter Reiko Yoshida have consistently shown sensitivity and brilliance in portraying girlhood through music—seen before in the TV shows K-On! (2009 2011) and Sound! Euphonium (2015–). Their international breakthrough came with the film A Silent Voice (2016).
The Science Saru studio is renowned for its breathtakingly beautiful and daringly experimental animation—Inu-Oh was screened at R&A in 2022. Meanwhile, the studio’s trusted composer Kensuke Ushio keeps music at the heart of it all.
