Graduate student Agnes (Eva Victor) is at the top of their class—the kind of student who gets special attention from professors. Their best friend Lydie (Naomie Ackie) wonders whether there’s something going on between Agnes and Professor Preston, but Agnes brushes it off. They’re excited when they’re invited to Preston’s home to go over their thesis. However, the evening takes a dark turn, and Agnes leaves traumatised.

Sorry, Baby is a portrait of what happens in the aftermath: the university’s attempts to sweep the incident under the rug, the irreplaceable support Agnes receives from their best friend, their hesitant steps toward a career in academia, a budding relationship with a new neighbour (Lucas Hedges), and—above all—the turbulent and slow process of recovery.

Sorry, Baby marks the directorial debut of Eva Victor, best known as an actor. It’s a story of survival after a traumatic experience and of life after sexual violence. Bittersweet and unflinchingly honest, the film moves between humour, anger, and deep emotion. In addition to directing, Victor wrote the screenplay and delivers a compelling lead performance. Filled with dry wit and painful honesty, Sorry, Baby is also a touching portrayal of a friendship that evolves alongside the changes life brings over the years.
