National Competition: Other Dimensions
Journey through the uncanny valley. This competition screening includes new Finnish short films Astro TV, The Grapes of War, IURIMA – A Tale of Three Fishermen, Final Scenes of Disaster Movies and Tempest of My Eyes.
In Astro TV, astrologer Sigrid guides people through sleepless nights, but one caller seems worrying. Can Sigrid help them before Jupiter and Pluto align?
The Grapes of War is a summary of how a small scuffle escalates into a war. The opposing parties are incapable of listening, let alone putting themselves in the other’s shoes.
In IURIMA – A Tale of Three Fishermen, a mystery story with horror elements, starving fishermen fight for survival on a remote island in a harsh world similar to the end of the 19th century, where some kind of cataclysm has occurred. There is no food left and as they desperately try to fish, something unexpected emerges from beneath the surface.
Final Scenes of Disaster Movies consists of three imaginary endings for disaster movies. The ideas have been collected from people in Helsinki, and acted by 100 volunteers. A zombie movie, a dystopian ecocatastrophe and a monster movie are all realised in different styles.
Tempest of My Eyes is inspired by William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest. In this post-apocalyptic science fantasy, Prospero controls the dreams of other characters and their struggles on a forgotten island.
