National Competition: Within Memories
Five stories about memories and remembering. This competition screening includes new Finnish short films Memories Move Like Distant Islands, Memorabilia, Akira, A Sudden Appearance and In My Hand.
Memories Move Like Distant Islands is a kaleidoscopic tale that stretches through layers of time, exploring the tense relationship between humans and wetlands. In a quiet village, the emergency call center receives reports of a drifting island. Elsewhere, a wetland archaeologist tracks groundwater levels in a drained peat field – the same field, where she years earlier uncovered a mythical snake rod.
In Memorabilia, two estranged sisters enter a virtual recreation of their childhood in an effort to find their missing mother. Upon entering the memories, the sisters will have to mend their broken relationship while looking for their mother. In the world of memories, the sisters face the truth and the strange creature lurking there.
In Akira, Akira Takaki spends much of his time rewatching his childhood home videos. Although his father filmed some of them nearly 30 years ago, Akira still remembers his favourite scenes by heart. With a truly unique and playful approach, this film explores what happens to childhood memories when they’re brought into the present.
In A Sudden Appearance, Maija, short on money, turns up at her son Mikko’s party uninvited. Not having seen his mother for years, Mikko is forced to welcome the new guest.
In My Hand is a compelling true story, narrated by Niillas Somby, that explores the personal and historical struggles of the Sámi people. The film navigates between imprisonment, protests, and surreal encounters, providing a unique insight into one man’s extraordinary journey.
