National Competition: Geography of Life
Cartographers of change – people in spaces and situations. This competition screening includes new Finnish short films Confessions of Undecided Women, Ocean Blvd, Revel and Room for a Break.
Confessions of Undecided Women explores the emotional whirlwind women in their thirties go through when they don’t know the answer to possibly the biggest question of their lives: do I want to become a mother? The biological clock keeps ticking louder and louder but the pressure doesn’t take away the uncertainty of what they want out of life.
In reference to a Lana Del Rey song, Ocean Blvd poetically explores the politics of architecture, safe spaces, and visibility from a trans person’s perspective. The work blends fictional and non-fictional narratives to outline the boundaries of reality. Sometimes our dreams or imagined worlds are more real than the world around us.
In Revel, Meri wants to believe that everything is just like before – a night with friends, laughter, wine, and the familiar bond. She carefully arranges her home, covering the traces of the night before, but beneath the surface, something lingers that she refuses to face. As her friends arrive, old memories and new tensions intertwine, and the illusion Meri has built begins to crack.
Room for a Break explores changes in our working life through everyday spaces. The film depicts breaks in a think tank, construction site container, museum, and midwife break room, among others. A break expands into a question of space and time: who can take a break in today’s work life, in what kind of settings are breaks taken, and who decides on breaks?
