Jukebox
One of Finland’s most distinctive auteurs takes a philosophical look at jukeboxes — those musical fixtures of bar corners — in the Spanish countryside.
Jacob (Brontis Jodorowsky), a French writer hung up on his past, embarks on a journey to find inspiration for his new book. He is also hunting for a mysterious jukebox. His guide to the wintry countryside of Northern Spain is The Jukebox, a novella by Nobel-prize winning author Peter Handke.
Jacob is a sentimental man who has to leave his family behind in order to find creative peace. He is plagued by fear of the blank page and a desire to relive a traumatic memory connected to the jukebox. Slowly, the machine becomes an obsession and a holy altar for him. The film’s particular accomplishment is its way of seamlessly connecting the spiritual and the worldly. In the end, the film’s central question is: how much does one’s personal history determine one’s present – and will Jacob be able to let go of his past?
Finnish art house filmmaker Rax Rinnekangas is known for his poetic style and his love of Northern Spain. His new feature contains familiar anxieties around art, the modern world and developing technology, this time concentrated on an automated record player. Jukebox is one man’s journey through memories, music and mystery.
