From the directors of The Truffle Hunters (R&A 2020) comes the long awaited Gaucho Gaucho, which is situated in a completely different but equally unique region. At the Pampas in Argentina, people live with horses and on their terms. The main character Gauda is practicing handling horses with the old timers and trying to make space for herself in the masculine world of the riders. The teacher at the village school is trying to get Gauda to wear the school uniform but has no luck. Gauda, who is wearing a rider’s outfit, leather chaps and a large beret, responds with, ”I’m a gaucha and this is my outfit!”
The cinematography beautifully caresses the rugged scenery. The directors Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw lived in the Pampas for over two years to gain insight into the timeless way of life of the gauchos, whose lifestyle is endangered. The jangly guitars on the hit song “La Balsa” by Argentinian band Los Gatos and George Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers fit seamlessly into the rhythm of the clip-clopping of horse shoes. Gaucho Gaucho won the Special Jury Prize for Sound at Sundance. It invites the audience to step into the saddle.
