February’s R&A Presents screenings celebrate anime with a highly anticipated new release, a forgotten gem, and a family favorite

R&A esittää

The R&A Presents screenings bring festival vibes to the start of the year! The screenings at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi on Saturday, 28 February are dedicated to Japanese anime cinema, featuring the highly anticipated new release Scarlet, the cult classic Angel’s Egg, and the Studio Ghibli favorite Arrietty.

The February R&A Presents screenings invite anime lovers to come together! The three films of R&A’s Anime Day showcase the diversity and different styles of Japanese animated cinema across the decades. Tickets for all screenings are now on sale on the festival’s website.

Taking center stage on Anime Day is the new film Scarlet (2025) by R&A audience favorite director Mamoru Hosoda (e.g. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, R&A 2009; Mirai, R&A 2018), which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. This visionary work follows a sword-wielding warrior princess in the Middle Ages. Seeking revenge for her father’s death, the princess is wounded and ends up in another world, where an idealistic young man from the present day shows her an alternative way to live. Scarlet will be released in cinemas after its R&A preview screening.

Anime Day is capped with a gem from 40 years ago, which has finally made its way to Finnish cinemas. Directed by the legendary Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, R&A 1996; Avalon, R&A 2002), Angel’s Egg (1985) is a mysterious visual journey and a dazzling showcase of hand-drawn animation. In a barren, dreamlike city, a young girl cares for a mysterious angel’s egg and forms a fragile friendship with a young man chasing his dreams.

The day begins with a family screening of Studio Ghibli’s enchanting Arrietty (2010). Directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and written by Hayao Miyazaki, the film follows Arrietty, who lives beneath the floorboards of a house with her Borrower family. When she meets a human boy, a bond forms between the two youngsters that helps them both better understand themselves. This classic story is filled with Ghibli magic. The film will be screened dubbed in Finnish.

R&A Presents screenings are held at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi in collaboration with Cinema Gilda. In addition to single tickets (€13 / €11 for discount groups), a combo ticket for Scarlet and Angel’s Egg (€22) is available. Children’s tickets for ages 10 and under cost €6. Tickets for R&A Presents screenings are sold on the festival’s website.

Launched in spring 2025, the R&A Presents screenings bring the spirit of the Love & Anarchy Festival to the big screen beyond the main September event. The 39th Love & Anarchy Festival will take place 17–27 September 2026.
