The Love & Anarchy Presents spring screenings continue on 29 March, offering a selection of classics and cult films. The screenings dive into the turn of the millennium with Sofia Coppola’s unforgettable debut The Virgin Suicides, Lee Chang-dong’s enigmatic Peppermint Candy, and the animated space opera Titan A.E.
Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy offers top-tier films to audiences throughout the spring, with monthly Love & Anarchy Presents screenings. The series continues on the last Saturday of March, March 29th, at Bio Rex Lasipalatsi, with screenings taking it back to the 2000s. The screenings are held in collaboration with cinema Gilda.
Rich Y2K nostalgia is on offer with a selection of three films from the 2000 HIFF programme. The festival’s closing film from 2000, The Virgin Suicides, kicked off Sofia Coppola’s career with a bang. This masterful and melancholic debut film delves into the simultaneously rough and pink world of 1970s Michigan teenage girls, telling the tragic story of five sisters.
Peppermint Candy is the second film by Lee Chang-dong, a top name in Korean cinema (Burning, 2018). This hallmark of the new wave of South Korean cinema moves backward in time, starting from the moment the protagonist, Kim, is about to jump off a railway bridge. As death approaches, life begins to flash before Kim’s eyes, and the film takes a journey through both his life and Korea’s past.
Don Bluth, the leading figure in non-Disney Hollywood animation, brings his animated space opera Titan A.E. to life, drawing inspiration from Japanese animation and the epicness of Star Wars, enhanced by three-dimensional CGI digital effects. The visually stunning action-adventure takes place in the year 2328, when aliens destroy Earth, and a portion of humanity escapes aboard spaceships. The largest, most crucial ship, Titan, carrying vital information, disappears.
Tickets for all screenings are on sale now! In addition to single tickets (€13), combo tickets for two or three films are available (€22 / €30). Discount tickets for students, seniors (70+), and job seekers are priced at €11. Proof of eligibility for discounts will be checked at the theatre door.
