THE RETURN, the first feature film by Danish director Malene Choi (b. 1973), reflects on international adoption’s impact on the lives of children. Choi was adopted from South Korea as a child; she calls adoptees the hidden minority of society. The docufiction drama – shot in a mere 15 days – uses every aspect of cinematic art to depict its stories. Choi graduated from the National Film School of Denmark’s documentary programme in 2005. Her films have been screened at the Gothenburg and Rotterdam film festivals as well as in Hot Docs and Nordic Panorama.
