Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy’s industry event, the Finnish Film Affair, will showcase Finnish films and Nordic talent to international film industry professionals for the eighth time. Danish director Lone Scherfig will receive the third annual Nordic Flair Award. Finland’s biggest film industry event will unfold in Helsinki from September 17th to 19th, 2019.
Director Lone Scherfig is the recipient of this year’s Nordic Flair Award, granted to a unique Nordic talent who is helping to put the Nordic region front and centre internationally. Known for her award-winning films such as Italian for Beginners (1995) and An Education (2009), the UK-based director is awarded for her inspiring work, spanning over three decades in Scandinavia and abroad. The Nordic Flair Award is given each year by Helsinki International Film Festival and its industry event Finnish Film Affair.
Finland’s main film industry event, Finnish Film Affair is getting ready for its biggest year ever with nearly a hundred international guests arriving to Helsinki on September 17th for a three-day showcase of Finnish films. Attending sales agents, distributors, TV buyers, festival programmers, producers and press will have a front row seat to the most interesting upcoming Finnish films and the opportunity to meet with local filmmakers.
This year, the event will showcase nearly 50 Finnish films and upcoming projects, with 58 per cent of Works in Development titles having been directed by a woman. Completed films in the lineup include the TIFF-bound Maria’s Paradise (dir. Zaida Bergroth), and Dogs Don’t Wear Pants (dir. JP Valkeapää) that premiered in Cannes earlier this year. The works in progress and development showcase will highlight 24 upcoming Finnish films, both fiction and documentaries.
Finnish Film Affair’s programme includes a panel discussion on sustainable filmmaking and a development clinic with Women in Film and TV Finland. This year’s Nordic Flair programme, created to help and further Nordic talent’s international career development, focuses on actors, directors and film composers.
Joining the Finnish Film Affair from the UK’s Independent Cinema Office, Maria Pirkkalainen started her new role heading the event in August 2019, when departing Head of Industry Laura Laaksonen was appointed Executive Director of Tampere Film Festival.
