The 30th anniversary edition of the HIFF begins today with the Opening Gala screening of Luca Guadagnino’s CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. The Sundance favourite was the first screening to sell out at this year’s festival. The Helsinki International Film Festival screens 173 feature films, the mini series LOVE & ORDER and 190 short films in the Cut to the Chase – R&A Shorts line-up. The ticket sales of the festival has started on a high note.

The guests available for interviews during the first festival weekend include German-Iranian director Ali Soozandeh who was recently awarded at Helsinki Script for his film TEHRAN TABOO, DAVID LYNCH: THE ART LIFE director Jon Nguyen, American director Susan Johnson with her debut feature film CARRIE PILBY, Polish filmmaker Rafael Kapelinski with his debut feature BUTTERFLY KISSES, French director Gilles Bourdos who brings ENDANGERED SPECIES to Finland straight from the Venice Film Festival and the leading actress of SAMI BLOOD Lene Cecilia Sparrok.
Next week’s guests include Nordic Flair winner Pilou Asbæk, Japanese director Naoko Ogigami with her latest film CLOSE-KNIT, THE MARKER director Justin Edgar, the filmmakers of the Nordic Film Prize Nominees and the director of both the Lumière Institute and the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Frémaux who arrives with his film LUMIÈRE!
The festival also welcomes newly announced guests QUEERAMA director Daisy Asquith and the editor of Ai Weiwei’s HUMAN FLOW, Niels Pagh Andersen.
HIFF Audience Award
The five films competing for the HIFF Audience Award are BEYOND DREAMS, BOBBI JENE, A CIAMBRA, CLOSE-KNIT and THE SUMMIT. The audience can vote for their favourite at the National Audiovisual Institute’s website (www.kavi.fi/hiffkilpailu). The winner of the vote will be shown as the Film of the Month at Cinema Orion in November.
