The leading actor Ellar Coltrane (born 1994) from HIFF’s closing film BOYHOOD has been confirmed as the festival’s main guest. Boyhood is a coming-of-age story, which was filmed over a 12-year-period, and all the central characters are played by the same actors throughout the film.
Boyhood has received great critical acclaim this year: director Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise, among others) was awarded the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival last spring and the Federation of Film Critics Fipresci gave Boyhood their Grand Prix for Best Film. Boyhood follows the turning points in the life of a boy called Mason for over a decade.
At the beginning of the film, Mason and his sister go through big life changes as they move to a new city with their single mother. At the same time, their father unexpectedly returns to their lives. Mason’s parents are played by Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, and his younger sister is played by director Richard Linklater’s own daughter Lorelei Linklater.
The exceptional production was filmed intermittently, a few days at a time, each year since 2000. When the filming started, Ellar Coltrane was only six years old. According to Linklater, he stood out from the other candidates with his intriguing personality. Coltrane was home-schooled for most of his childhood, which made it possible for him to learn through experience, arousing his interest in different forms of art. Despite the actor’s young age, Boyhood is not Coltrane’s first film; he has previous experience from commercials and independent films.
