HIFF Audience Award: Orion’s Film of the Month

A new Film of the Month screening format by the National Audiovisual Archive and Orion will be launched together with the Helsinki International Film Festival. The first film for the screening will be chosen by audience vote. The Archive and HIFF have chosen the four nominated films.

The winner of the HIFF Audience Award will see screenings at Orion during October. In the future, the Archive will conduct monthly screenings of films that are not otherwise in distribution in Finland. The Film of the Month project will be continued together with local film festivals. A film from the Espoo Ciné programme will be screened in November.

Audience award nominees

CHICKEN WITH PLUMS (France, Germany, Belgium 2011)
The director-duo Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud have transformed Satrapi’s comic into a colourful fantasy. The film carries elements of magical realism and tells the story of a talented musician (Mathieu Amalric) who has lost his violin and with it the will to live.

IN DARKNESS (Poland, Germany, Canada 2011)
In Darkness is a story about Leopold Socha (Robert Wieckiewicz) who hides a group of Jewish people in the sewage system of Lwów during the Second World War. The film by Agnieszka Holland is based on true events and was also a nominee for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

RENT-A-CAT (Japan 2012)
Naoko Ogigami’s (Kamome Diner) sympathetic film tells the story of Sayoko, a girl who rents cats to lonely people. Her clientele is varied: an elderly lady who has recently lost both her husband and her cat, and a man who has had to move away from his family for work.

WAR WITCH (Canada 2012)
War Witch looks at the African reality of life from many different points of view. Alongside the ruthlessness of war, local beliefs and the everyday life of people carry on. The story follows a teenaged girl, a child soldier, who becomes friends with an albino-boy named Magician. The lead actress, Rachel Mwanza, won the award for best actress at both Berlin and Tribeca film fest.
