Love & Anarchy is again looking for the best Finnish short films!

Love & Anarchy festival invites filmmakers to participate in this year’s national competition of Cut to the Chase – R&A Shorts. Deadline for submissions is 31st May.

Helsinki International Film Festival’s short film selection Cut to the Chase – R&A Shorts showcases approximately 180 short films every year. Especially young emerging talents are brought to the spotlight. New European films are at the heart of the programme together with the R&A Shorts national competition which presents the year’s best Finnish shorts – this year for the 4th time.

Last year, the winner of the main prize was the animated documentary film OIKEITA MIEHIÄ (Real Men) by Iiti Yli-Harja

“I had taken part in the competition also in previous years, always with enthusiasm and thrill!” tells Iiti Yli-Harja.

“R&A Shorts national competition has been an important platform for my films. Winning the main prize felt both unreal and incredibly great. The award has given me more confidence in my work and a boost for my career. I’m very happy that our team’s work touched people who saw the film. Thanks to the award, the film has been shown eg. in schools where pupils have discussed the themes of the film, the sensitivity of boys and men. It has felt great and important.”

The submission for the national competition of the R&A Shorts is open for fiction, documentary or animated films that are max. 30 minutes long and have been completed after the 1st of January 2020. The production or co-production country of the film must be Finland. The competition line-up is selected by members of the Love & Anarchy Festival Ministry. An independent jury appointed by the festival will choose the winners. All films selected for the competition will be screened as part of the 2021 Cut to the Chase – Love & Anarchy Shorts programme.

Once again, the programme will showcase some of the boldest and the best short films of the year.

The main prize is the R&A Short Award which is a monetary award. The Finnish Film Foundation’s Uusi Aalto (in English New Wave) Award will be given to a new talent. The best student film is awarded for the second time. In addition, all 2021 competition films will compete for the Audience Award.

The submission for the 2021 national competition is now open until May 31. Cut to the Chase – R&A Shorts programme will be screened from the 22nd to the 26th of September as a part of the HIFF – Love & Anarchy Festival.
