The 31st Helsinki International Film Festival will rewrite film history by showcasing trailblazing films full of love and anarchy. The first section of its kind in the history of HIFF will include eight classic movies. The audience will have a chance to influence the programming by casting their vote.

What would have been the main movie of HIFF in 1933, 1955 or 1972?

What is the audience’s favourite for the biggest and boldest Finnish film festival?

The 31st HIFF showcases classic films in a section of their own. The new re-reading of film history is named R&A Trailblazers. It includes eight films that either have been part of the festival’s past selections – or would have, had the HIFF existed in 1933 or 1972.

R&A Trailblazers films for 2018 are:

Ecstasy, dir. Gustav Machatý (1933)

The Way of the Dragon, dir. Bruce Lee (1972)

Sorcerer, dir. William Friedkin (1977)

Vagabond, dir. Agnès Varda (1985)

Daughters of the Dust, dir. Julie Dash (HIFF 1993)

The Adventures of Priscilla, The Queen of the Desert, dir. Stephan Elliott (HIFF 1994)

The section will also include a French film screened in collaboration with Yle Teema. The title will be announced at a later date.

The audience gets to choose too! You can vote for your favourite from three films to be screened as part of the section. The contenders are The Night of the Hunter (1955), The Godfather (1972) and recently rediscovered cult favourite 54 – Director’s Cut (1998).

Cast your vote and win a night for two people at Solo Sokos Hotel Torni located in the heart of Helsinki. Please include your full name and e-mail address if you wish to take part in the draw. The voting will be open until the 4th of September.

The voting has closed on September 4th.

More information about the voting can be found here.

R&A Trailblazers films will be shown in the atmospheric Savoy Theatre, which opened its doors as a cinema in September 1937.

The 31st Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy will love you from 20th to 30th of September 2018. The gala films of the festival will be announced later in August.
