The 4th Finnish Film Week, organized between 20th and 26th of September as part of Helsinki International Film Festival – Love & Anarchy, wrapped on Thursday September 26 with an award gala for industry professionals. The domestic theme week was a success, nearly doubling audience numbers compared to last year.

The Finnish Film Week is an annual event organized by HIFF and a group of film industry organizations. During the domestic theme week, the audience gets to see a number of Finnish previews as well as return to quality films that have been distributed during the year.

During the week, a total of 24 domestic films from 2013 were screened. The screenings were attended by filmmaker guests who presented their films and answered questions from the audience, creating an important space for discussion about Finnish films. In total, the Finnish Film Week screenings were attended by over 4000 persons, compared to 2800 last year, making the theme week a success.

The preview screenings at the domestic theme week included THE DISCIPLE by Ulrika Bengts, THE LAST LIFE OF LUCIFER by Rax Rinnekangas and THE SURREALIST AND HIS NAUGHTY HAND by Pekka Lehto. Dome Karukoski’s HEART OF A LION and Pirjo Honkasalo’s CONCRETE NIGHT, which got their world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival, were also screened during the Finnish Film Week.

At the Closing Gala of the week, the receivers of the annual awards for Finnish film industry professionals were announced. The following professionals received awards at the gala on Thursday night, hosted by actor Juha-Pekka Mikkola:

Producer of the year: Riina Hyytiä/ 21 Ways to Ruin a Marriage
Director of the year: Simo Halinen / Open Up to Me
Screenwriter of the year: Jenni Toivoniemi / The Date
Actor of the year: Laura Birn & Liisi Tandefelt / Purge
Colleague of the year: Johanna ”Jolle” Onnismaa
Documentary act of the year: Juha Elomäki / Pirkanmaa Film Centre
