HIFF 2012 ends today, Sunday 30th September, with highest audience numbers of all time. During the last evening of the festival, the sold out screening of RUST AND BONE takes place. The director and screenwriter of the film, Jacques Audiard, will be present at the screening.
Screenings of the last evening of the festival include the incredible SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS, a documentary following the final concert of acclaimed dance-electro band LDC Soundsystem; PABLO, a documentary following the interesting life of graphic artist Pablo Ferro; and Brillante Mendoza’s latest film CAPTIVE. The final screening of the festival, YOU, THE LIVING, which belongs to the Fireworks from the Love & Anarchy Archives theme, takes place at Kesäkino Engel at 11pm. Tickets are still available for all the above screenings.
Ticket sales continue for the last festival screenings, but the total number of admission sold by 5pm crossed 57,500. Over 180 feature films and 70 short films from approximately 50 countries were seen in 450 screenings during the 11-day long festival. On top of this, prior to the festival, a popular Outdoor Film Picnic was organised together with Helsinki Festival, and pre-screenings of HIFF films were seen at the WDC Pavilion. During the actual festival dates, 20th – 30th September, approximately one fourth of screenings were sold out. A number of clubs and other side events were also organised during the festival.
A number of film screenings, evening events, panel discussions and a presentation of Finnish films in development took place during the Finnish Film Affair, which was organised as a part of HIFF. Over two hundred domestic producers, filmmakers and industry developers, and about forty foreign buyers, distributors and industry reporters took part in the first Finnish Film Affair industry event. Among the international participants were sales agents such as Wide Management and distributors such as NBCUniversal Pictures. Journalists representing industry publications such as Screen International, Variety and the Hollywood Reporter, also took part in the event. The feedback of the event shows that there is a clear need for an international event promoting Finnish feature films in Helsinki also in the future.
The festival partner, Veikkaus, gave away free tickets to HIFF audiences at the box office. With this, HIFF and Veikkaus wanted to surprise film enthusiasts and remind them that Veikkaus betters contribute partly to the festival.
