An important guest has been confirmed to Helsinki International Film Festival just in time for the festival opening. The awarded director and screenwriter of HIFF Closing Film RUST AND BONE, Jacques Audiard, arrives to Helsinki for the final weekend of the festival and is present at the gala screening of his film, which closes the entire festival on 30th of September, 6:30pm at Bio Rex.
HIFF has followed Audiard’s career since the 1990s when SEE HOW THEY FALL (1994) and A SELF-MADE HERO (1996) were seen as part of the festival programme. In 2005, Audiard’s film THE BEAT THAT MY HEART SKIPPED, which received multiple César and BAFTA awards, was seen at HIFF. The French master filmmaker won the Cannes Grand Prix with his bold prison-film A PROPHET in 2009.
As a filmmaker, Audiard has become known as an interpreter of the dark side of life. His latest film, RUST AND BONE, tells the unconventional love story of a killer whale trainer played by the gorgeous Marion Cotillard, and a crude man played by Matthias Schoenaerts (eg. BULLHEAD, HIFF 2011). The film, which saw its premiere in Cannes, has been at the top of Parisian critics’ lists over the summer.
The Helsinki International Film Festival begins tomorrow, Thursday 20th of September, with Benh Zeitlin’s BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD. The producer of the film, Dan Janvey, will be present at the screening to answer the questions of the audience. Other guests of the first HIFF weekend include Maja Milos, the director of the controversial film CLIP; Hafsteinn Sigurðsson, the Icelandic director of EITHER WAY; Ronald Vietz, the producer of skate-film THIS AIN’T CALIFORNIA and Goran Jevtic, the actor of Serbian comedy THE PARADE. The complete list of HIFF guests can be found at hiff.fi/en/vieraat.
All reservations made for HIFF screenings should be claimed today, Wednesday 19th of September. Unclaimed tickets will be released for sale tomorrow. Tickets are still available for the majority of screenings.
