Included in the HIFF programme, VEGETARIAN CANNIBAL has been nominated as Croatia’s entry for the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film. The film is directed by one of the most known directors of the country, Branko Schmidt. VEGETARIAN CANNIBAL won five Golden Arenas at the Croatian national Pula Film Festival, including best director and best actor in a leading role for Rene Bitorajac and tells the story of a gynaecologist who performs illegal abortions at a fertility clinic in Zagreb. Bitorajac will be in Helsinki as a HIFF guest between 22nd-25th of September.

UNIT 7 by Spanish director Alberto Rodriguez, which is also part of the HIFF programme has, in turn, been chosen as one of the three Spanish nominees for the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film. UNIT 7 follows a DEA special unit in Sevilla, whose mission is to clean the streets of the city by the beginning of a world expo. The film received its premier at the Tribeca Film Festival in the spring of 2012.

INTOUCHABLES, by director-screenwriters Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, has been chosen as the French nominee for the Oscar race. INTOUCHABLES is a feel-good saga of an ultra-wealthy quadriplegic and the petty criminal who becomes his caretaker. The film has been hugely popular in France.
